Former Republican State Representative Carl Bearden is against expansion. He says getting rid of federal mandates that make providing insurance in the private sector is the way to go.

Don’t expand government health care programs, reduce them. That’s the word from a former Missouri State Representative. Carl Bearden now runs the conservative group United For Missouri.

He hopes state lawmakers reject the proposal to expand Medicaid again this year, just as they did last year. The federal government is offering to pay the full cost of expanding Medicaid coverage for three years as part of the national health care law known as the Affordable Care Act.

Herbert Smulls was the latest inmate to die by lethal injection. Some supporters of the death penalty argue that Smulls’ execution may make other criminals think twice before killing.

St. Louis County prosecutor Bob McCulloch, whose office handled the case, isn’t worried about that part of the debate.

Supporters of the idea point out that the federal government will pay for the expanded coverage for three years. After that, the plan calls for Missouri to pick up about ten-percent of the expansion tab. Both sides agree that was included in the bill in error and Republicans want to override the veto with the promise of fixing the prescription sales tax increase next January.

And that could change the way the state government taxes you and your business. Republicans passed a tax reform bill that would have reduced incomes taxes over time and raised some sales taxes to replace them.

Governor Nixon vetoed that idea, saying it’s too risky. Republican State Representative Paul Curtman thinks it’s past time we adjust the tax code.
